Professional Development Seminars



Topic:      Developing Effective Interpretive Programs

Rationale: Effective Interpretive Programming can help make a visit to a museum both more enjoyable, relevant and educational. This program will explore how community museums can best develop their interpretive programming.

Instructors: CMA/PEI Past Perfect  Upgrade Project Staff - Sabrina Webster, Mark Demone & Gabrielle Major
Rationale: The Community Museums of Prince Edward Island has been involved with its members in a number of initiatives to help upgrade and enhance the research data each museum has relating to its collection. Research techniques are one of the areas which has been identified as a priority by members.

       Planning & Building In-House Exhibits

Rationale: The planning and creation of effective in-house exhibits is an extremely important task for small museums. This program will examine how to plan and build a professional and effective exhibit using limited resources.

 

Topic:      Finding and Keeping Volunteers

Location:  Macphail Homestead, Orwell 
Instructor: Speakers from PEI Network –Canada Volunteerism Initiative, local community museum operators (TBA) 
Rationale: Volunteers are the foundation of most community museums. Finding and keeping good volunteers is one of the most important tasks for a community based museum. This program will explore the development and operation of an effective volunteer program. Volunteerism rated extremely high in last year’s training needs survey.  


Topic: Product Development for Museums  # 2

Instructor: Ute Simon-Okshevsky, Executive Director, Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador
Rationale: The Community Museums Association in cooperation with the Heritage Network Atlantic has been involved in developing an e-commerce site for museums in the region. This workshop will explore ways that community museums can develop products for sale which are complementary to their museum.
