The Museum

The Kensington Veterans Memorial Military Museum is located in Kensington, next to the Royal Canadian Legion Lt. Col. E.W. Johnstone, Branch # 9. The museum is run by the legion and is the only free standing military museum in Atlantic Canada. The collection consists of military memorabilia, clothing and weaponry from the Boer War, WWI and WWII to Korea. As well, there are miniatures and interpretive displays of important battles fought by Canadian Forces.

What We Did

The Community Museums Association visited the VMMM and took forty-one artifacts back to CMA’s head office. Each of the forty-one artifacts has been fully processed; accessioned, labeled, researched, catalogued, condition reported, cleaned, photographed and housed in acid-free tissue paper. The artifacts we worked on consisted of military uniforms, archival documents, a commemorative wood block and photographs. An accession list of the artifacts completed has been provided as well as all digital images taken. All records have been put on the Past Perfect data system.

Apart from processing the artifacts a collections management system was developed for the VMMM. This system consists of:

  • An Accession Register
  • An Outgoing Loan Register
  • An Acquisition Source List
  • An Acquisition Source Information Sheet
  • An Acquisition Questionnaire
  • A Cataloguing Form
  • A Short Term Loan Agreement
  • An Outgoing Loan Agreement
  • A Deed of Gift
  • A guide to using the new system
