Object History

John Yeo's Log book. The Hon. John Yeo, born on June 29, 1837, lived in Port Hill, Prince County, Prince Edward Island. Son of James and Damaris Yeo who immigrated in 1818 from Kilkhampton, Cornwall, England.

The son of a shipbuilder, merchant, landowner and farmer, John Yeo inherited many of his fathers entrepreneurial traits. John Yeo was a well known Islander for his roles as a farmer, shipbuilder and parliamentarian. Though he was educated in England, John returned to the province of his birth and began his career as parliamentarian.

John was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island representing the district of 2nd Prince in 1859. As a conservative he was re-elected many times between 1863 and 1886. In the 1890 election, he was elected as a Liberal. In 1871 he served as speaker of the assembly, served in the Executive Council from 1873 to 1879 as a minister without portfolio and was opposition leader from 1889 to 1890. He resigned in 1891 to run for federal office and was elected to represent Prince County as a Liberal.

Yeo was elected to the Canadian House of Commons representing the Prince Edward Island riding of East Prince in the Canadian federal election of 1896. On November 19, 1898 he was appointed to the Canadian Senate on the recommendation of Sir Wilfred Laurier, and served in that capacity until his death.

Yeo also served as the Grand Master of the Freemasons for Prince Edward Island.

This ledger records transactions from 1872 until the 1920s.
