In 1900 Prince Edward Island was the first province in Canada to bring in prohibition legislation and in 1948 was the last to repeal it. Rum-running was a major problem during this time and many famous rum-running vessels are rememebered to this day.

The Nellie J. Banks was one such vessel becomming famous in the Maritimes in the early days of rum-running. The Nellie J. Banks spent over twelve years smuggling illegal alcohol to P.E.I. This rum barrel is known to be one of the ones used by the crew of the Nellie J. Banks.
