Object History

Rug beaters, also known as carpet beaters, carpet whips, clothes beaters, dust beaters and pillow fluffers were commonly used until the early 20th century when vacuums become more affordable. Carpets, rugs, clothes, cushion, & bedding were hung over a clothesline or railing and the dust and dirt beat out of them. Usually made of wood, rattan, cane, wicker, spring steel, or coiled wire. The most arduous job for all middle class Victorian women was rug cleaning. Cane rug beaters and brooms were the only tools used until the invention of the carpet sweepers.
